Last weekend I watched from my sick bed (sniff, cough, hack!), the 2007 DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Urban Challenge. A 6 hour 60 mile course through an abandoned Air Force Base. Out of 36 entries 6 finished. For those of you who remember the movie Terminator, SkyNet is on it's way...
Seriously. There was a robot out there named SkyNet... came in 6th. Um.. Yea.
'The DARPA Urban Challenge is an autonomous vehicle research and development program with the goal of developing technology that will keep warfighters off the battlefield and out of harm’s way. The Urban Challenge features autonomous ground vehicles maneuvering in a mock city environment, executing simulated military supply missions while merging into moving traffic, navigating traffic circles, negotiating busy intersections, and avoiding obstacles.'(Sarah Connor was unavailable for comment.)-via Darpa.mil
Update for those already harpin' at me from the peanut gallery: NO. There's no one driving. No remote control. NO HUMAN INTERFACE AT ALL. Right.
