Death of DLP?

According to Endgaget Fujitsu has announced that it will be getting out of the display business.. "the pricing and profitability of this segment has compressed beyond the point which our company could realize a satisfactory return on investment." If you need more reason to believe that the HDTV industry is tight, Sony recently officially stated that come February its three RPTV plants would quit production of DLP's, including its 3LCD and SXRD lines, after current inventories are exhausted to focus on the hot-selling Bravia LCD line. Toshiba, Philips and Hitachi have all stopped producing rear-projection sets as well.

That's a shame as DLP's are a very affordable alternative for those who don't wish to pretend their TV is a picture frame.. (Bitter maybe? Yea. I love my DLP). The pictures are on par or even better than that of many LCD and Plasma sets in some respects (depending on the brand) and for large sizes, you can't go wrong. I visited a cousin the other day with a 61" Samsung DLP to watch some basketball and the picture was fantastic.

Oh well, obsolescence eventually gets the best of everything I suppose.
(Sigh, Rest in Peace RPTV.)
