Hyundai's New Beginning?

A number of years ago I had a date with a woman who drove one of the early Hyundai's. An Excel. Both of which was an experience (read: scary) that I wouldn't mind having washed from my brain by L. Ron Hubbard. But Hyundai.. and my taste in women.. have come a long way since the early nineties (the Excel first debuted in 1986).

A few months ago I wrote about the upcoming Hyundai Genesis (which premiered in a commercial during the Superbowl). *

To debut at the NY Auto Show this week will be the replacement for the Tiburon Coupe (a car that was never quite too popular but much loved by their owners). The Genesis Coupe is an automobile that seeks to prove that Hyundai is working very hard to put those scary years behind them. Note: The concept premiered at the LA Auto Show back in November.

Car porn..

To be fair, in terms of overall quality and value Hyundai (and Kia) have come up to speed much faster than their Japanese counterparts (Honda and Nissan weren't too great in the beginning either remember?) The new Hyundai hopes to dispel the fears of 30,000 more car buyers this year with the promise of quality, value and style.
I mean this car is nyce! Not quite Porsche or Aston Martin nice.. but almost Infiniti G37 Coupe beautiful and most definitely not Nissan Altima Coupe ugly.

Hyundai sold 467,009 units in the US in 2007 which was short of their goal of 500,000. They now hope to sell 500,000 in 2008.

Will this be a new Genesis for Hyundai?
